LeapFrog 1st Grade Writing Game Books (RugRat Wild Word Games)
LeapFrog is a company that is dedicated to using technology to make fun learning toys for children of all ages.
So it should come as no surprise that the LeapFrog 1st Grade Writing Game Books (RugRat Wild Word Games ) are books that are designed to be used with the Leap Pad Plus Writing System.
These game books are supposed to help your first grader master such things as:
- Parts of speech
- Synonyms and antonyms
- Spelling
- Word building
- Deductive reasoning
First Impressions
Let’s face it, if you are going to help your child learn to write and learn to write well, then your child needs to be writing.
While learning the parts of speech, proper spelling and other reading connected activities may be fun and easy to do via a computer type toy, it is not going to develop your child’s creativity nor encourage a love for writing.
If this game book set had been advertised as English and Spelling learning games rather than writing games, then these books may well have been more impressive.
What The Reviews Have To Say
Reviews for the 1st Grade Writing Game Books: RugRats Wild Word Games are difficult to find.
While overall Leapfrog gets high marks for inventing innovative learning games for children, it is hard to tell if this particular game book will be much of an aid in teaching children to write.
However, it will have some educational value, and if kids enjoy the games, then it could be good.

Tracing ABC Free By Remarkable Games
Remarkable Games is a company that develops games that can be downloaded to any Android device.
The Tracing ABC Free contains some letters (both upper and lower case) of the alphabet, a few numbers, and three or 4 shapes.
It is meant to:
- Help encourage letter, number, and shape recognition
- Aid in the developing of fine motor skills
- Teach children how to begin to write their letters and numbers
- Learning words
First Impressions
Advertising the Tracing ABC as a free learning game for children is very misleading.
This free game is actually a sample of what your child will learn if you order and pay for the full downloadable game.
It is a great idea from the aspect that parents can see if this app is something that their child will be interested in before purchasing the full version.
However, both the free game and the full version may have some serious problems including:
- Tracing is done with your child’s finger not a pencil or even a stylus that resembles a pencil, so they won’t get much practice in the fine motor skills needed to hold and write with a pencil
- The tracing of the letters are done opposite of how most schools teach children to write their letters. This means that if your child does learn to write letters the way the game teaches them, then they will have to relearn how to make letters properly, something that may be highly confusing to 4 and 5 year olds.
This game does have some good points however, as it does teach number, letter, and shape recognition, and also helps the child learn to read some beginning words.
Although suggested for 4 year olds, 3 might be a better age to start your child leaning to recognize the letters and numbers and such.
What The Reviews Have To Say
Reviews for the Tracing ABC free are between average and good with this game receiving average feedback from customers.
Some consumers were disappointed that the free version only contained a few letters, numbers and shapes, while other customers simply didn’t like the idea of their child learning to trace letters differently than what they will taught in school.
However, several customers really liked the free version well enough to buy the full version, and they found it was a great tool for their 3 and even 2 year old children, to begin learning in a fun and non-pressured way.
Since there is a free sample version of the game, it may be worth checking out to see if it is something you feel will help your child to start learning to read and write.
